Cahoot's 3D Bin Packing tool enables automatic label creation for MLMQ (Multi-Line, Multi-Quantity) orders by calculating how many units can optimally fit into your available boxes based on product dimensions. This advanced feature eliminates the need for prior shipment history when creating labels for new SKU and quantity combinations.

Important: 3D Bin Automation is only used for orders with new SKU/quantity combinations that don't have prior shipment history. If previous package data exists, Cahoot will use that instead.

When 3D Bin Packing is Used

The system uses 3D Bin Packing when:

  • Multi-line or multi-quantity order is imported
  • No prior shipment history exists for the exact SKU + quantity combination
  • All configuration requirements are met
  • Account has 3D Bin Automation enabled by Cahoot

Create Packaging

Note: These packaging configurations only apply for shipping software sellers. If your are outsourcing all of your fulfillment to Cahoot, you can ignore any packaging set up.

1Go to Account Settings → Package Manager tab.

2Configure boxes that meet these requirements:

✅ Required for 3D Bin Automation:

  • Packaging Type = Box (polys/mailers not supported)
  • Positive Box Quantity Available (Add Packaging Inventory)
  • Use for MLMQ Automation = Yes

Critical: If box quantity is 0 or negative, or "Use for MLMQ Automation" is set to No, the box will not be considered and orders may go to Manual Review.

When adding new boxes, use the inside box dimensions to ensure 3D Bin Automation chooses the correct box size.

System Optimization Settings

Cahoot configures internal parameters to ensure optimal packing efficiency:

Volume Utilization Requirements:

  • Minimum Fill: 65% - Prevents oversized boxes that waste space
  • Maximum Fill: 95% - Ensures safe packing space for protection

Weight Limits:

  • Minimum Weight: 0 lbs
  • Maximum Weight: 50 lbs (for automated processing)

Why These Limits Matter

Minimum Fill (65%):

  • Prevents using oversized boxes that increase shipping costs
  • Ensures efficient packaging for cost optimization
  • Reduces dimensional weight charges

Maximum Fill (95%):

  • Leaves space for protective packaging materials
  • Prevents overpacking that could damage products
  • Allows for safe handling during shipping
Note: These parameters are configured by Cahoot and can be adjusted based on your specific product characteristics. Contact support if you need custom settings.
🔧 Troubleshooting "3D Bin Packing Attempt Failed"

Understanding the Error

When you see "3D Bin Packing attempt failed" in Manual Review, it means the system cannot fit the items into any available box configuration that meets the automation requirements.

Common Causes and Solutions

1. Volume Outside Fit Requirements (65%-95%)

  • Issue: Items either don't fill the box enough or exceed safe packing limits
  • Solution: Review available box sizes and consider adding intermediate sizes
  • Alternative: Create label manually with appropriate packaging

2. No Eligible Boxes Available

  • Issue: Box quantity is 0 or "Use for MLMQ Automation" is set to No
  • Solution: Update box inventory levels and automation settings
  • Check: Verify packaging type is set to "Box"
