Cahoot Returns Onboarding Checklist
This checklist covers everything a Shopify merchant needs to do to get Cahoot Returns live on their store, from giving Cahoot access through placing a test return. Complete the steps in order. Cahoot will provide your app install link and returns portal URL along the way.
Step 1: Add Cahoot as a User in Your Shopify Store
Cahoot needs access to your Shopify admin to set up and support the Returns app. Follow the instructions in Adding Users to Shopify.
Step 2: Install the Cahoot Returns App
Cahoot Returns will send you the app install instructions.
- Open the install link.
- Review the requested permissions and click Install.
The Cahoot Returns app requests the same Shopify permissions that other returns apps use. It needs them to read orders, create return records, and issue refunds in Shopify.
Step 3: Turn On the Cahoot Returns App Embeds in Your Theme
The app embeds let your storefront show Like New items on product pages and condition details in the cart. Turn them on in your live theme.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Click Customize on your live theme.
- Click the App embeds icon in the left sidebar.
- Toggle on both Cahoot Returns app embeds.
- Click Save.
Step 4: Turn Off Shopify's Native Returns Feature
Customers should submit all returns through the Cahoot returns portal. Turn off Shopify's built-in returns option so customers don't see two different ways to return an item.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Customer accounts.
- Turn off returns using whichever option your store shows:
- If you see Self-serve returns and cancellations, turn it off and click Save.
- If you see Order actions, click Manage, open the editor's settings, turn off Return, and click Save.
Step 5: Add Your Returns Portal Link to Your Store
Cahoot provides your returns portal URL, which uses the format https://[yourstore].letscahoot.net. Add it where customers look for return instructions.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Policies and add the returns portal link to your Return and refund policy.
- Add a Returns link to your storefront footer menu that points to the returns portal URL.
Step 6: Place a Test Return
A test return confirms that your returns portal, Shopify connection, and app setup are working together. Use an order that has already shipped, since only fulfilled orders can be returned.
- Open your returns portal URL and look up the shipped order.
- Select an item and complete the return reason, photos, and refund method.
- Submit the return.
- Let your Cahoot onboarding contact know the test return is submitted.
The return appears in your Cahoot merchant panel.
What Cahoot Configures With You During Onboarding
After the steps above, Cahoot works with you to finish configuring Cahoot Returns for your catalog:
- Return reasons: Cahoot sets up return reasons, sub-reasons, and issues based on the product categories configured in your Shopify store.
- Peer-to-Peer SKUs: Cahoot reviews your historical returns data and order volume to recommend which SKUs should be enabled for Peer-to-Peer returns.
