Hazardous Materials and Restricted Products
This article explains how to ship hazardous materials (HAZMAT) through Cahoot. Cahoot strictly follows Federal Regulations on hazardous materials transportation under Section 177.1 of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). If your product is classified as hazardous, complete every step in this article before sending inventory to Cahoot.
Step-by-Step Requirements
1Notify Cahoot Support before shipping any hazardous materials. Contact Submit Ticket to obtain explicit prior written authorization.
2Configure all HAZMAT SKUs in Cahoot before your Inbound is approved. Go to Create Your Products and select the correct HAZMAT classification on the More Details tab. See HAZMAT Classification below for details.
3Package HAZMAT SKUs correctly. All hazmat items must be fully enclosed in either the original manufacturer's packaging or hard (not soft) outer packaging suitable for overboxing. Packaging must have sufficient surface area to display all required HAZMAT labels and the shipping label without any overlap.
4Submit required documentation to Cahoot for approval before your Inbound is accepted. See Battery Fulfillment Requirements below for documentation specifics.
HAZMAT Classification (UN Codes)
When creating your product in Cahoot, select one of the following HAZMAT classifications on the More Details tab:
- Dangerous Goods
- Biological Material
- Lithium Batteries — further subdivided by UN number (see table below)
| UN Number | Description |
| UN3090 | Lithium metal batteries, without equipment |
| UN3091 | Lithium metal batteries, non-rechargeable, contained in equipment |
| UN3091 | Lithium metal batteries, non-rechargeable, packed with equipment |
| UN3480 | Lithium ion batteries, rechargeable, without equipment |
| UN3481 | Lithium ion batteries, rechargeable, contained in equipment |
| UN3481 | Lithium ion batteries, rechargeable, packed with equipment |
Battery Fulfillment Requirements
All lithium battery shipments to Cahoot must meet the labeling, product, documentation, and packaging requirements below. Inbounds with unapproved or non-compliant battery products will be rejected.
Lithium Battery Shipping Labels
All inbound shipments containing lithium batteries must display the required lithium battery shipping label prominently on the outside of the packaging. Use the label that matches your battery type.

Product Requirements
All lithium battery products must meet the following criteria:
- Cells ≤ 20Wh and batteries ≤ 100Wh — if installed in or with a device under UN3481, PI966 Section II
- Cells ≤ 1g and batteries ≤ 2g — if installed in or with a device under UN3091, PI969 Section II
- Cells ≤ 20Wh and batteries ≤ 100Wh — if loose under UN3480, PI965 Section IA
- Cells ≤ 1g and batteries ≤ 2g — if loose under UN3090, PI968 Section IB
- Product can be stored at room temperature
- Product does not require special handling equipment
- MSDS has not expired
- Wholesale value per item does not exceed $125 (prior written approval from Cahoot required for higher-value items)
Documentation Requirements
Cahoot must pre-approve the most current MSDS and UN Test Summary Documents for all approved UN categories before your Inbound can be accepted. Inbounds containing unapproved hazardous materials will be considered non-compliant — items will be returned at your cost or disposed of at Cahoot's sole discretion, and restricted item non-compliance fees will apply.
Inbound Packaging & Label Requirements
- Products must be completely enclosed in inner packaging, then placed in a strong, rigid outer packaging. Items must be secured against movement (e.g., using void fill) and equipped with an effective means of preventing accidental activation.
- All inbound shipments containing lithium batteries must display the required lithium battery shipping labels on the outside of the packaging.
- All inbounds must be shipped in accordance with ICAO/IATA standards and the applicable conditions of 49 CFR.
