Getting Started with Peer-to-Peer Returns
Cahoot's Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Returns module lets your customers ship returned items directly to the next buyer — skipping your warehouse entirely. This reduces return shipping costs, speeds up resale, and lowers your environmental footprint.
This guide covers the few steps needed to get P2P Returns live on your Shopify store. Most of the heavy lifting is handled by Cahoot during onboarding.
What's Already Set Up
When you created your Cahoot account and connected your Shopify store, the following was completed automatically:
- Your Cahoot account (merchant name, contact info, company details)
- Your Shopify store connection via the Cahoot Fulfillment App
If either of these is missing, contact your onboarding specialist before continuing.
Step 1: Install the P2P Returns App
In addition to the main Cahoot Fulfillment App, you'll need to install a second Shopify app — the Cahoot Peer-to-Peer Returns App. This app gives Cahoot the permissions needed to display used item listings on your product pages and manage returns on your behalf.
1Install the app using this link: Peer-to-Peer Returns App
2Approve the requested permissions when prompted.
After installation, you'll see the P2P Returns app listed under Apps & Sales Channels in your Shopify admin.
Step 2: Enable Cahoot App Embeds in Your Theme
For "like new" product listings to appear on your storefront, you need to enable two Cahoot app embeds in your Shopify theme editor. This takes about 30 seconds.
1In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize on your active theme.
2In the theme editor, click the App embeds icon in the top navigation bar (the grid icon, or press Ctrl + 3).
3Toggle on both Cahoot embeds:
- Cahoot Footer Code
- Cahoot Head Assets
4Click Save.
Once enabled, "like new" items will automatically appear on your product pages below the Buy button whenever a returned item is available for resale.
Optional: Customize the Listing Placement
By default, "like new" listings appear directly below the Buy button. If you'd prefer to place them elsewhere on your product page:
1In the theme editor, navigate to the Default product page template.
2Click Add section in the left sidebar.
3Select Cahoot Product Display from the app sections list.
4Drag the section to your preferred position on the page and click Save.
Step 3: Send Cahoot Your Brand Details
Your onboarding specialist needs just a few things from you to configure your returns portal. Everything else is set up by Cahoot with sensible defaults.
Required from you:
- Brand logo — A URL to a hosted image (PNG or SVG) for your returns portal header
- Contact email — The support email address displayed in your returns portal
- Return window — How many days after purchase customers can initiate a return (default is 30 days)
That's it for now. Cahoot pre-configures your return reasons, item condition options, refund settings, and pricing with defaults so you can start processing returns right away. You can customize all of these later — see Configuring Your Returns Portal for the full list of available settings.
Step 4: Test and Go Live
Before going live, Cahoot Support will work with you to test the full returns workflow:
1Submit a test return through your returns portal to confirm the customer experience — return reason selection, photo uploads, and submission.
2Review and approve the test return in Cahoot to verify condition assignment and "like new" item creation.
3Confirm the used item listing appears on your Shopify storefront with the correct pricing, condition badge, and availability.
4Place a test order for the "like new" item, then map the return to the new order on the Map Returns screen.
5Create and verify the shipping label to confirm it generates correctly, the customer receives a shipping notification, and tracking syncs to Shopify.
Once testing is complete and you're comfortable with the workflow, Cahoot will activate your account for live returns.
